Fred found himself 'banged-up' in prison; he also found that his friends and family no longer wanted to know him. The sense of loneliness and rejection were dreadful: Fred even thought of ending it all. "However will I survive prison without seeing someone from the 'outside' to talk to once in a while?" he asked himself night after night. His fellow inmates' names were on the Visits List, they could meet friends and family in the Visits Hall, have a decent cup of tea, a sandwich, a relaxed chat. Fortunately for Fred he was told about Prison Visitors - a group of men and women who give some time each month to visit those in prison who have no visits.

Fred could be any inmate in any prison. A Prison Visitor is anyone who has time to care, to share, to listen to someone like Fred. A Prison Visitor accepts a prisoner has been convicted by the courts and is serving a sentence in prison for his crime. Prison Visitors commit themselves to visit a prisoner on a regular basis; turning up for visits when they say they will; listening in confidence to their prisoner; giving their prisoner a sense of self-respect and being cared for - and buying that decent cup of tea and, perhaps, a chocolate bar.

If you are aged between 21 and 70 and wish to explore further about being a Prison Visitor please contact us at

There are a significant number of foreign nationals in our jails and the NAOPV welcomes applications from those who have a good conversational level of a language other than English.

Prison Visitors belong to their local PV group, meeting regular for training and support. They also belong to the National Association of Official Prison Visitors (formerly National Association of Prison Visitors) which oversees prison visiting in all prisons, holds regional conferences, produces a bi-annual News Letter and has an annual AGM in London.
